Slack & Loom - how to setup & use within Slack

The steps to integrate Loom and Slack so you can drive Loom from Slack easily creating videos to share internally

Step 1: Login/connect to your Slack account.

Step 2: Click on where it says ‘More’ located on the left hand side of your home page above all of your Slack messages/channels. A drop down menu will appear and you can select ‘Apps’ to take you to all the Apps that Slack can integrate with.

Step 3: Type in Loom within the search bar of the App home page, then click on the Loom App icon to begin the process.

Step 4: Once you are on the Loom App home page, click on the ‘Configuration’ button (see below).

Step 5: Once you are on this screen (see below), click on the green button that says ‘Open in Slack’ and you will be directed to the Loom message screen within the Slack App. Here is where you can send a direct message through Slack using Loom, now that it has been configured to your Slack account.

Here is a link to a helpful support article with step-by-step instructions on how to initiate a Loom recording, preview, and share into Slack (info. from this link is also copied below);

How to initiate a Loom recording, preview, and share into Slack:

After you've added the Loom app for Slack, be sure you have one of our Loom recorders installed (desktop preferred!) to record. Initiate a Loom recording by typing the commands /loom or /record into Slack's text box to initiate a Loom recording and press enter.

Once you've finished recording...

Be sure to choose the Open in Slack option from your browser to go back to where you initiated the recording in Slack. Then select the option to Always open these links in Slack to always return to your Slack when recording Looms from Slack. Here, you will see a preview of the video in a message that is only visible to you, which you can choose to send or cancel.

Cancel will remove the message, but your video will still be available in your Loom Library for you to access later. Send will send the Loom link into the channel or DM as seen below.

If you choose not to Open in Slack, the video will open on Loom.com instead. From there, the link can be shared and embedded anywhere you'd like, including Slack.

⚠️ Please note: Recording Looms from Slack is only enabled for Slack Desktop and Web experiences. It is not currently available on Slack mobile at this time.

How to view and manage your Loom notifications in Slack:

Once you've authorized the integration, you'll see it listed under your apps. Here you'll get notifications if someone watches, reacts to, or comments on your videos.

From Slack, you can enable and disable the notifications you receive in Slack by type directly from the Home tab.

How to remove Private thumbnails in Slack:

When a video is shared with only specific people or only workspace members (more info on privacy settings here), then the video will appear as a private thumbnail, as seen below.

Here's how to fix this:

⚠️Following actions can only be done by Workspace Admins.

  • Visit your Workspace settings and scroll down to Video Privacy Preview.
  • From here, you will need to connect your Slack Workspace to Loom.

  • You will be re-routed to the integrations page, where you can connect to Slack.
  • Once you have connected to Slack, we will default your setting to show private video thumbnails (you can disable this setting at any time in your workspace settings).
